Media Relations that Matter!
A mere mention in a roundup story does an institution little good. Unlike other communications consultants, RossWrites is focused on helping colleges tell their own stories in media that matter. The following modules can help an institution achieve that goal.
National Story Identification - RossWrites will review the college’s strategic plans, salient programs, and identify newsworthy fsculty/staff with scholarship and expertise; conduct on-campus interviews; prepare a list of three or four big story ideas; create pitches to media; provide a list of journalists likely to be interested in each; and mentor existing staff to achieve placement. Fee: $5,000
The Big Story – RossWrites will research and write a feature story on the topic which has the greatest potential for enhancing the reputation of a college overall or supporting initiatives in fund raising, legislative relations, or admissions. The feature will be designed for use in the college’s magazine, for adaptation to the web, and for recasting as a pitch to national media. RossWrites will identify journalists who should be interested and will pitch the story to them. Fee: $5,000. If the chance of placement would be increased by a personal visit with journalists by the principals involved in the story, then an additional fee of $3,000 per city will be charged.
Op-ed Writing and Placement – RossWrites will work with a prospective author of record to research, write, and place an opinion piece that supports one of a school’s strategic initiatives or admissions/development objectives. Fee: $3,000
Media Relations Mentoring – RossWrites will facilitate an on-campus review of the goals, staffing, operations, and budget of the office responsible for placing news in media; prescribe adjustments to increase media coverage; return to campus for a second visit to conduct a one-day on-campus training workshop (can include media training for faculty/staff), and provide six months of e-mail/telephone mentoring for the chief media relations person. Fee: $7,500
